A word about Abbott & Hispanics

leave a comment »

This is  some great news from Texas:

“Exit polls show that Davis’ outreach to women and Hispanics fell short.

While 47 percent of female voters supported her — better than Democrat Bill White did four years ago against Perry — she fared worse among the traditional Democratic constituency of Latinos.

Part of it might have been her rise to fame on the abortion issue, one that doesn’t play well among Hispanics.

But Abbott made a strong play for Hispanic support. He flooded the airwaves with an ad featuring his Hispanic mother-in-law, made almost 20 campaign stops in South Texas, and boasted that his wife, Cecilia, would be the first Latina to serve as first lady of Texas.

According to polls, Abbott made his mark, winning 44 percent of the Hispanic vote.”

Mr Abbott asked Hispanics for their vote.  He spoke respectfully about border security and immigration.   He didn’t pander.  He treated Hispanics like adults.

Great job!

I just voted for Mr Abbott for governor!

As I have done since 1988, when I stood in a long line for hours to vote for VP Bush for president, I cast my ballot early.

I voted for AG Abbott for governor and the GOP ticket.   Frankly, the Texas Democrat party has become way too liberal for me.   Once upon a time, you could vote for a centrist Democrat, like the late Senator Bentsen.   Frankly, those were the days as the song goes.

According to news reports, early voting is going well for the GOP but please vote!

Don’t take anything for granted and vote!

Texas Update: Abbott Up 20 in a New Poll

leave a comment »

As I suspected, AG Abbott is opening up a big lead against Sen. Davis, the Democrat candidate: 57-37%, or 20 points!

The poll is fascinating when you look at the internals:

AG Abbott leads among women (52-40%) and whites (70-25%) and is doing very well with Hispanics (43% to Davis 49%).

He leads in “other ethnic” groups by 52-37%.  I’m not sure what that is or what percentage of the voting bloc they represent.

I would argue that Miss Davis is underperforming with blacks at only 80%.  Her position on abortion could be hurting her with blacks in Texas.

This poll shows the biggest lead but is in line with others recently published: the RCP average is Abbott plus 14%.

As I’ve been saying, AG Abbott will win by about 15 points – a nice solid victory that reflects the state’s conservative values.  Furthermore, it also points out what a weak opponent Senator Davis is.  It’s hard to believe that Texas Democrats could not find a more centrist candidate who could appeal to suburban voters.

Last, but not least, a friend working in the “early election” stations told me that the GOP traffic has been very heavy so far.  It’s unscientific but has been reliable in the past about voter intensity.
