Happy birthday Barbie:

On this day in 1959, the first Barbie doll goes on display at the American Toy Fair in New York City.

Eleven inches tall, with a waterfall of blond hair, Barbie was the first mass-produced toy doll in the United States with adult features.

The woman behind Barbie was Ruth Handler, who co-founded Mattel, Inc. with her husband in 1945.

After seeing her young daughter ignore her baby dolls to play make-believe with paper dolls of adult women, Handler realized there was an important niche in the market for a toy that allowed little girls to imagine the future.

And lots of Barbie dolls were sold over the years!

1962: Johnny Carson made his “Tonight show” debut

(From a post that I wrote in 2013)

Johnny Carson made his debut on The Tonight Show this week in 1962.   It went on until May ’92 when Carson retired.

Along the way, Carson had a way of addressing our political issues with humor and incredible timing.  He made politics fun, specially when he would poke fun at both sides with great lines.

Do we have someone like that today?  Not really!    I know that Saturday Night Live will do a good intro from time to time.

There are other comedians but I just don’t stay up to watch any of them anymore. Dennis Miller on The O’Reilly Factor is great but it’s once a week.

Where is Johnny when we really need him?

“Dr Kildare” made its debut on TV on this day in 1961.       The series was on the air for 5 seasons, 191 episodes and made a star of Richard Chamberlain.   It was a fun series and well written.

Did you enjoy watching “Hazel”?   It was a hilarious TV show about Hazel the maid and The Baxters, a family somewhere in suburban USA.

Shirley Boothe played “Hazel” and she did a great job.

It was funny.    The shows are now available in a DVD format:

“Hawaii Five-O”, one of the all time TV classics, aired for the first time this week in 1968.    It stayed on until April 1980.  Frankly, I don’t remember the show lasting that long!

We also remember ‘Hawaii 5-0″ because of the show’s music, specially its fantastic intro……….click for more!

Happy # 70 to Cindy Williams

We remember Cindy Williams for two big roles in the 1970s.

First, she was Laurie in “American Graffiti”, one of the big movies of the decade.

Second, she was one of those two crazy girls in “Laverne & Shirley”, a very funny show.

We remember Raymond Burr (1917-1993)

We remember Raymond Burr, known to most of us as Perry Mason.

He was born on this day in 1917 and died in 1993.

“Perry Mason” was a very popular series and Burr became one of the most popular TV personalities of all time.

Burr had another popular series called “Ironside”.   It was good but I think most of us remember him for those Perry Mason shows.
