Paying for a new stadium without fans

leave a comment »

Two months ago, we were so excited about a new Rangers’ rotation headed by 2-time Cy Young winner Corey Kluber and AL All Star Mike Minor and 16-game winner Lance Lynn.

Furthermore, the Rangers were finally going to play under a roof, a brand-new stadium perfect for our hot summers.  It had lots of us dreaming of watching a good team in an air-conditioned facility.

Then came COVID-19 and everything is different.  No baseball or Corey Kluber.

Worse than that, no money to pay the new stadium, as we see in this editorial:

The Rangers are facing tough financial times, too, with some employees facing pay cuts. How long can the Rangers, or any sports team, meet financial obligations without ticket revenue? We hope the pandemic doesn’t test those limits. We take comfort in knowing that the city of Arlington doesn’t face financial ruin because of Globe Life Field debt.

It looks like the Rangers will start playing in early July.  We don’t know if they will play here or in some other locations.

No matter what, cities like Arlington will face the other side of depending so much on sports’ revenues.  It all sounded like a great idea until the coronavirus spoiled a good thing.

A word about May 13

We remember May 13:

Tuesday’s podcast:  “Mexico and “Fast & Furious” with Allan Wall“……We will discuss President Lopez-Obrador’s comments about the “Fast & Furious” program under the Obama Administration..

1917:  We remember Our Lady of Fatima today……….the movie “The miracle of our Lady of Fatima” is very good.

1981:  Do you remember the day that Pope John Paul II was shot?  It happened on this day in 1981.

Music:   We wish a very happy # 70 to Stevie Wonder who was born in Michigan on this day in 1950.

“La Bamba”:    Richard Steven Valenzuela (Ritchie Valens) was born on this day in 1941 in Los Angeles.  He became one of the first Mexican-American rockers and the inspiration for “La Bamba“, a great movie from the 1980’s.

“Motown story”:    Motown had 32 # 1 hits.     Who recorded the first one?   The answer is Mary Wells who was born on this day in 1943.      She died in 1992.   Back in 1964, she recorded “My guy”, a song that later showed up in the soundtrack of “Sister Act”

“Hall of Fame:  The great Stan Musial got # 3,000 on this day in 1958.    It happened at Wrigley Field.    Musial came into the game as a pinch-hitter.    He may be the only player to get # 3,000 as a pinchhitter.   Musial went into The Hall of Fame in 1969.   He won 3 NL MVP’s and retired with a .331 average, 3,630 hits, 475 HR & 1,961 RBI.
