Democrats cross the infanticide line

leave a comment »

This week, 44 Democrat senators could not support “….a bill that would require a doctor to use all of his skills to preserve the life of a child born alive after an attempted abortion.”   (Laura Ingraham)

Apart from morality, this is political madness.  In other words, these U.S. senators are on the other side of where most voters are on abortion.

A new Marist poll this week shows a shift in attitudes about abortion:

According to the Marist/Knights of Columbus poll, released February 25, equal percentages of Americans now identify as pro-life and pro-choice.

This is the first time since 2009 that the number of self-identified pro-life Americans is equal to or greater than the number calling themselves pro-choice.

Barbara Carvalho, director of The Marist Poll, said the figures suggest that recent efforts to remove legal restrictions on the procedure, and widen the availability of abortion up to the point of birth, may have led to more people identifying themselves as pro-life.

“Current proposals that promote late-term abortion have reset the landscape and language on abortion in a pronounced — and very measurable – way,” she said in a press release.

The pro-abortion critics are already saying that this is a sham poll because the Knights of Columbus are behind it.

In fact, there are a couple of new variables in the discussion about abortion.

First, technology now allows an expecting mother to hear her baby’s heartbeat earlier than ever or 12 weeks.  It’s hard to defend the notion that this is not a life when a heart is beating.

Second, the talk about late term abortion has brought the barbarism to the front pages.  Governor Ralph Northam’s remarks about keeping the baby comfortable removed the curtain for all to see that this is really about the termination of a life.

Abortion will be an issue in 2020.  It won’t be about the woman’s body.  It will be about the baby denied an opportunity to live.

Lopez-Obrador suffers from Sandy O disease

leave a comment »

In one single sense, President Andres Lopez-Obrador reminds me of President Trump.  People either love or hate him.  Many in the middle class or business sector call him names not suitable for this page.  On the other hand, the poor believe that he will change Mexico, especially all of the corruption embedded in the system.

We saw a bit of this over the last few days.

First, “El Presidente” said that the movie Roma was evidence of “racismo” in Mexico.   He said this:

Asked if he agreed with Cuaron that Mexican society remains rife with racist prejudice, the veteran leftist did not mince his words.

“I completely agree. Unfortunately, there is a lot of racism in Mexico,” he said.

Lopez Obrador, who in the 1970s worked for the indigenous affairs bureau in his home state of Tabasco in southern Mexico, has pledged to give priority to the poor as president.

This is pure pandering!  Yes, it is true that many Mexican families have maids. Yes, it is also true that most of these women come from very poor areas of the country. At the same time, most of these “muchachas”, as Mexicans call them, live inside the homes and get many benefits, from school to medical care, paid by the family.  In other words, it is wrong to say that this is a sign of racism.  I’d rather call it a sign of poverty.

Then “El Presidente” got really silly.  He announced this:

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador says his administration has auctioned off most of the bulletproof and luxury vehicles used by past presidents.

Lopez Obrador has eschewed the traditional trappings of power since taking office on Dec.1. He uses a compact Volkswagen car and refuses to live in the sprawling presidential residence compound, instead remaining in a middle-class condo.

He has pledged to sell off the presidential jet and instead uses commercial flights. He also disbanded Mexico’s equivalent of the Secret Service.

This is stupid, to say the least.  Lopez-Obrador is not saving any money at all by selling bulletproof cars or the presidential jet.  He is also exposing himself, his family, and people who travel with him to an attack.

Last, but not least, a couple of Mexican friends told me that they think that the bit about bulletproof cars is just talk and will never happen.

We will see, but Lopez-Obrador is turning into the Mexican version of Sandy O.

No crisis on the border?

leave a comment »

We continue to hear that there is no crisis on the border.  However, the situation in Mexico does not support that conclusion.

Let me ask you this: have you talked to anyone in Mexico lately?  When you do, eventually, you will talk about the violence in the country.

Over in Cancún, a Caribbean resort with beautiful beaches and wonderful hotels, the violence has arrived.  This is from the latest advisory:

Mexico makes a popular destination for vacationers enjoying spring break, but a warning from the US State Department remains in effect for the busy travel season.

The advisory was first issued in November, but may take on new urgency in the wake of a deadly attack at a club in Cancun on Saturday, as reported by Fox News.

In the shooting at La Kuka, located in central Cancun about four miles from the area housing most tourist hotels, a group of four men opened fire, killing five people and wounding five others.

In April of last year, 14 people were killed in Cancun in a 36-hour span.

When the State Department unveiled its new, four-tiered travel advisory system, they placed the Mexican states of Colima, Guerrero, Michoacan, Sinaloa and Tamaulipas in the highest tier of danger, advising Americans not to travel there at all.

“Violent crime, such as murder, armed robbery, carjacking, kidnapping, extortion, and sexual assault, is common.  Gang activity, including gun battles and blockades, is widespread,” the warning reads, in part.

Travel was not restricted to Cancun, which is in Quintana Roo state, because “homicides appeared to be targeted, criminal organization assassinations.”  But travelers were warned that bystanders have been injured or killed in the past.

Quintana Roo was classified as “Tier 2,” with “increased caution” advised.

Gang activity?  That’s interesting.

Why the gangs?  What are they fighting about?

They are not fighting over the blondes on the beach.  They are killing each other over drug routes to the U.S.

Crisis on the border?  Yes.  I am not saying we have to build a wall from San Diego to Brownsville.  However, a wall in key areas will work and will have a major impact on cartel routes to the U.S.  It will force these organizations to find alternatives to bring drugs north.

Yes, there is a crisis on the border, and we’d better deal with it.
