Berlin 1948: Another sad day in the brutal history of communism

leave a comment »

On this day in 1948, President Truman confronted a serious communist challenge in Berlin:

One of the most dramatic standoffs in the history of the Cold War begins as the Soviet Union blocks all road and rail traffic to and from West Berlin.

The blockade turned out to be a terrible diplomatic move by the Soviets, while the United States emerged from the confrontation with renewed purpose and confidence.

It was a shining moment for President Truman, who met the challenge by flying supplies to the people of West Berlin:

The United States response came just two days after the Soviets began their blockade. A massive airlift of supplies into West Berlin was undertaken in what was to become one of the greatest logistical efforts in history. For the Soviets, the escapade quickly became a diplomatic embarrassment. Russia looked like an international bully that was trying to starve men, women, and children into submission. And the successful American airlift merely served to accentuate the technological superiority of the United States over the Soviet Union.

On May 12, 1949, the Soviets officially ended the blockade.

The Berlin Airlift was one of President Truman’s finest moments! It was a wonderful demonstration of US presidential leadership. It also gave us the story of  “the candy bombers” or US pilots who dropped candy for the children of Berlin.

Maybe there is a red wave out there

Maybe there is a red wave out there:  “Polls of Senate Races Boost GOP Prospects for Retaining Control“.

Let’s add Florida, where Governor Scott is running well against incumbent Senator Nelson.     It also looks good for the GOP in Montana, North Dakota, Missouri, Indiana and West Virginia.

We will wait for the voters but things are looking very good for a nice red wave in the US Senate.

We have seen this movie before and it never ends well for the Democrats……

We have seen this movie before and it never ends well for the Democrats………..saying that Trump is Hitler is historically inaccurate and a lousy political strategy, as Allan Richarz wrote:

Apart from the historical ignorance in comparing the mechanized genocide of 6 million people with the temporary warehousing of children in detention facilities, going full-bore with accusations of Nazism is a grave strategic error on the part of those opposing the president.”

Bad history and politics.

It may also be a sign of electoral desperation.    After all, they’ve thrown everything at President Trump and nothing sticks as they say.

From blue to red…………..

From blue to red:  Democrats face trouble from population losses in high-tax blue states.

It started years ago, as we see in California.   It will get more intense as the new tax law takes hold.

The big losers are California, New York and Illinois.   The big winners are Texas and southern states.

Mexico: Lopez-Obrador’s bizarre statement

leave a comment »

Down in Mexico, the voters are getting ready to cast a ballot in the next two weeks.  In other words, the rhetoric is getting a little crazy.

Andrés Manuel López-Obrador’s latest rant is about as crazy as it gets:

This is what AMLO said:

Mexican presidential candidate Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) called for mass immigration to the United States during a speech Tuesday declaring it a “human right” for all North Americans.  “And soon, very soon – after the victory of our movement – we will defend all the migrants in the American continent and all the migrants in the world,” Obrador said, adding that immigrants “must leave their towns and find a life in the United States.”

He then declared it as “a human right we will defend,” eluniversal.com reports.  While the election is not until July 1, Obrador is by far the frontrunner.

Now, let’s analyze what he said.

First, how would any of this help Mexico?  My serious Mexican friends tell me they’d rather find prosperity and jobs in their country.  Telling people to go north is another way of saying that AMLO’s policies will not help Mexico keep Mexicans.  Believe it or not, most Mexicans would rather stay home, or at least that’s what they tell me.

Second, is AMLO proposing to change Mexico’s rigid immigration laws?  Is he going to open Mexico’s southern border and allow people in?  How does AMLO define a “migrant”?

Third, does he believe that the U.S. is just going to sit back and watch Mexicans cross the border?

The bad news is that AMLO’s remarks are irresponsible and not helpful.  The good news is that he may be getting desperate, sensing that Mr. Anaya is gaining on him.
