Once in a while, it is worth recalling the words of Lincoln.

On this day in 1858, senatorial candidate Abraham Lincoln addresses the Illinois Republican Convention in Springfield, He warned that the nation faced a crisis that could destroy the Union. He told the 1,000 delegates in a very ominous tone: “A house divided against itself cannot stand.”

Two years later, he was elected president and the Civil War followed.
