August 1971: Remembering “How can you mend a broken heart” by The Bee Gees!

leave a comment »

The Bee Gees (Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb) had the # 1 song in the US back in August 1971.

In fact, “How can you mend a broken heart” was # 1 for several weeks.  It turned into one of the most favorite love ballads in pop history.

It was also their first # 1 in the US and followed “Lonely days“, another big hit earlier in the year.

As we know, The Bee Gees had quite a few more hit records in the 1970’s!

They dominated the radio and charts with songs from the soundtrack of “Saturday night fever” and several more the LP’s like “Main course“, “Children of the world” & “Spirits having flown“.

They were clearly the band of the late 1970’s, i.e. who else had eight # 1 songs from 1975-79.

Today, we remember one of the Gibbs’ most beautiful love songs from the summer of 1971.

P.S.   Real and devout fans may remember the B-side, a Maurice Gibb song and solo called “Country woman“.

August 7, 1960: Castro banned all religious TV and radio broadcasts in Cuba

leave a comment »

On this day in 1960, Fidel Castro banned all religious TV and radio broadcasts.   It was a reaction to The Catholic Church condemning the rise of communism in Cuba.

Not much later, the Catholic schools were closed and I remember that.   Our beloved Maristas in was closed and some of the clergy expelled.    I lived through all of that.

Years later, I learned that the school grounds became Villa Maristas, or the place where political prisoners like Armando Valladares were tortured.

We say happy birthday to Don Larsen.    He was born on this day in 1929 in Michigan City, Indiana.

Don played on several teams and retired with a 81-91 record.

His big moment came in Game 5 of the 1956 World Series.    He pitched the only perfect game in World Series history.     Larsen shut down a great Brooklyn Dodgers’ team that included future Hall of Famers Roy Campanella, Pee Wee Reese, Jackie Robinson and Duke Snider, along with power hitter Gil Hodges.

The game ended on a called strike 3 on Dale Mitchell.

1907: Walter Johnson won the first of 417 wins!

leave a comment »

On this day in 1914, Walter Johnson won the first of his 417 wins.     In 1936, Johnson was part of the first class inducted to The Hall of Fame.

Check out these awesome statistics: 417 wins, 2.17 career ER, 3509 Ks, 531 complete games and 110 shutouts.

He also lost 279 games!

Johnson had a .599 winning pct.   In other words, he lost 40% of his games.

How do you lose 40% of your games with a 2.17 career ERA? He must have had a lot of 1-0 or 2-1 complete game losses.

Maureen Dowd approves of Robert Mueller

Independent Counsel Robert Mueller has an impossible task. He must conclude an investigation and convince people like me that it’s all fair and balanced.  Maureen Dowd just made that task more difficult.

Mr. Mueller is off to a bad start with all the news about Democrat donors on his staff and now leaks concerning the grand jury. More than that, it looks as if Mueller’s investigation is going in so many directions that he may need a GPS to figure out where he is travelling to next.

Mueller is turning into Exhibit A of why independent counsels are just a bad idea. The Founding Fathers intended for these investigations to be done by Congress. I don’t remember reading anything about independent counsels in the U.S. Constitution.

Mueller’s public image got a big punch between the eyes when Maureen Dowd cheered  the investigation:

Going hammer and tong after hammer and sickle, Mueller has crossed Trump’s Red Line, using multiple grand juries and issuing subpoenas in a comprehensive inquiry covering not only possible campaign collusion but also business dealings by Trump and his associates with Russia.

The Times reported Friday that Mueller’s investigators had asked the White House for documents related to Michael Flynn.

A White House adviser told me recently about how scary Mueller’s dream team is, and how Jared Kushner should be nervous.

Every time Mueller adds a legal celebrity to his crew, the music gets cued for an “Ocean’s Eleven” or “Dirty Dozen” array of talent.

One lawyer helped destroy the New York City mafia; another helped bring down Nixon; another tackled Enron; others are experts on foreign bribery and witness-flipping.

As GQ’s Jay Willis wrote, “If these people were coming for you over a parking ticket, you’d be thinking about liquidating your life savings.”

Maureen will get a big cheer from the left with this column, I’m sure that there are Democrats all over enjoying Miss Dowd’s opinion.

My guess is that Mr. Mueller is not one of those enjoying it. He now has Maureen Dowd cheering his work, on top of all of those Democrat donors and leaks.
