July 2, 1937: Amelia Earhart lost over the Pacific

On this day in 1937, Amelia Earhart’s aircraft was lost over the Pacific.    She was flying around Howland Island, a tiny island 2,227 nautical miles away and in the center of the Pacific Ocean.   We believe that she, and her companion Frederick Noonan, simply ran out of fuel and likely crashed in the ocean.
