Happy # 43 Derek Jeter: You’re still the best!

leave a comment »

In 1996, Derek Jeter broke in with the Yankees. I started to coach our 3 boys in the local Little League the same year.
Over the next ten years, I coached kids and Derek Jeter won baseball titles. He won 5 of them. He will retire with 3,500 hits, a .311 lifetime average and .321 in 38 World Series games.
It didn’t take long before every kid in our Little League wanted to wear #2 or imitate Jeter’s batting stance.
Every kid also wanted to go in the hole and make that patented Jeter jump and throw to first base.
Suddenly every kid wanted to play shortstop and drive the ball to the opposite field, another Jeter speciality.
He was the top dog on the biggest team in baseball.
As a dad, I was happy that my sons idolized Jeter. He was exactly the kind of professional athlete that you’d want your kid to idolize.
Jeter understood something that most professionals don’t: You are a role model whether you like it or not!   In other words, kids will look up to you and do what you do.
In 2014, the baseball world said goodbye to Jeter in Minneapolis. He got everything that he deserved. I was applauding him too because the world could use more men like Jeter.
The Yankees came to Texas later that summer in August and huge crowds were there to show their respect for Jeter again.
He is really something special, the kind of professional athlete who comes around once in a generation.

We remember Estela Raval (1935-2012)

As a young boy in Cuba, and later in the US, I remember hearing “Quiereme Siempre” on the radio or my parents’ turntable.
It was the kind of “catchy song” that sort of stuck with you.  I think that they were personal favorites of my parents who used to enjoy them a lot.
My father told me that they were Los Cinco Latinos from Argentina and that Estela Raval was the lead vocalist.
The group was very popular in Cuba in the early 1960’s.   Los Cinco Latinos recorded Spanish versions of The Platters’ hits, such as “My prayer” and “Smoke gets in your eyes” plus Paul Anka’s “You are my destiny”.
In the late 1970s, I bought one of the LPs & learned a bit more about the group.  They’ve been one of my favorite Spanish speaking musical groups ever since.  I don’t think that they record anymore but their sound is great.
Estela Raval was born May 19, 1935 in Argentina.   She died on June 6, 2012.   Wonder what happened to the other four members?
The Cinco Latinos had great harmonies plus Estela’s very elegant good looks.
“Siempre, (siempre), quiéreme siempre, (quiéreme siempre) ,
tanto, (tanto) como yo a ti (como yo a ti) Nunca, nuca me olvides,
dime, dime que si Cuando, (cuando),
beso tu boca, (beso tu boca), nada (nada ),
nada es mejor (nada es mejor)
Dame, dame tu vida, quiéreme siempre,
dame tu amor, Siempre, quiéreme siempre, tanto, como yo a ti Nunca,
nunca me olvides, dime, dime que si Cuando,
beso tu boca, nada, nada es mejor Dame,
dame tu vida, quiéreme siempre, dame tu amor, …Amor…”

Are the Democrats falling into a Russia trap?

leave a comment »

Over the last few days, we’ve learned that President Obama was aware of Russian meddling in our 2016 elections. The BBC has this story about it:

Mr Trump said Mr Obama had learned well before the 8 November poll about the accusations and “did nothing”.

His comments followed an article in the Washington Post which said that Mr Obama learned last August of President Vladimir Putin’s “direct involvement”.

The alleged meddling is the subject of high-level investigations in the US.

President Putin has repeatedly denied any Russian interference into the presidential election.

The Washington Post article says Mr Obama was told early last August by sources deep within the Russian government that Mr Putin was directly involved in a cyber campaign to disrupt the election, injure Hillary Clinton and aid a Trump victory.

The Post said Mr Obama secretly debated dozens of options to punish Russia but in the end settled on what it called symbolic measures — the expulsion of 35 diplomats and closure of two Russian compounds. They came in late December, well after the election.

So what do the Democrats do now? Was President Obama incompetent and negligent? How did he allow a foreign power to get away with messing with the integrity of our vote?

On the other hand, some Democrats seem aloof about the charges that the Obama administration was aware of Russian activities.

In other words, it was either bad or insignificant. The Democrats can not have it both ways.

President Trump is exactly right in calling out the Obama administration and Russia.

My guess is that there are a lot of Democrats who are wishing that they never played this Russia card. It looks like the whole thing is blowing up in their faces.

Yes, Mr. Mueller has a lot of probing to do. He should start by knocking on Mr. Obama’s door (he lives by The White House) and try to learn a thing or two about what Russia was up to.
