President & First Lady Taft and the “opening day” pitch

leave a comment »

On this day in 1886, future President Taft married Nellie Herron in Cincinnati.     The future president & First Lady met at a literary meeting.    They say that she was a bit ahead of her time, interested in politics and worked as a private school teacher.    Nellie visited The White House in 1877 and told everyone that she’d love to live there someday.

Taft was elected the 27th president in 1908.    A couple of years later, he started the tradition of the opening day presidential pitch.
