We remember Bobby Murcer (1946-2008)

We remember the late Bobby Murcer born on this day in 1946.

Another Oklahoma kid playing center field for the Yankees?

Bobby Murcer broke with the Yankees in 1965.   He was supposed to replace Mickey Mantle, the first kid from Oklahoma, but that was probably unfair.     

Murcer did have some very good seasons with the Yankees.   In 1971, he hit .331 with 25 HR & 94 RBI.    Overall, he hit 253 HR with 1,043 RBI  for the New York Yankees, San Francisco and the Chicago Cubs.    His 840 RBI were 9th best in the 1970s.   He was a very good player but the Yankees were not.

Murcer was traded for Bobby Bonds after the 1974 season.    He finally played for the Yankees in the 1981 World Series but was not a regular anymore.   

After baseball, Murcer became a very popular broadcaster in the Yankees’ TV booth.

Murcer died in 2008.    He wore “# 1” or the number that most Yankee fans associate with Billy Martin.
