1972: The FBI and Director J. Edgar Hoover

On May 2, 1972, Americans woke up to the news of Director Hoover’s death.   He had been running the FBI since 1924.    In other words, he started under President Coolidge and died under President Nixon, or 8 presidencies over 48 years.    

Director Hoover was indeed very controversial but also made the FBI into a very professional crime fighting organization.    Nevertheless, his career is Exhibit A that no one should be in such a powerful position for 5 decades!      

P.S Hoover was very concerned about communist influence in the US, as we can see in this book from 1959.    I recall reading this book in the 1970’s after Mr. Hoover’s death:
