Happy # 56 Cal Ripken

leave a comment »

We say happy # 56 to Cal Ripken, the modern iron man of baseball.

Ripken broke with the Orioles in 1981 but became a starter in 1982.   He opened the season at third but was switched to shortstop.    Cal was the 1982 Rookie of the Year and MVP in 1983 when Baltimore won to the World Series.

We remember Ripken for the streak but he put together a pretty career as well:  .276 batting average, 3,184 hits in 3,001 games, 431 HR & 1,695 RBI.     Add a couple of gold gloves and the 1991 MVP.

One of the greatest Orioles ever!
