July 1, 1863 and the Battle of Gettysburg began

The Battle of Gettysburg began today in 1863.    It was a brutal battle to say the least:

The largest military conflict in North American history begins this day when Union and Confederate forces collide at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The epic battle lasted three days and resulted in a retreat to Virginia by Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia.

The movie was based on the book “The killer angels“:

In the early 1990s, a great movie was made about the battle.   It was great and so was “Going home” by Mary Fahl from “Gods and Generals:
