“Surfer Girl” is just right for the first day of summer!

Welcome to the first day of summer.  I love Beach Boys songs about summer.  They are fantastic.

As I mentioned, Brian Wilson is a superb songwriter, arranger and pop music vocalist.

What do we listen to this year for our first song of summer song?  “California Girls”? “Surfin’ USA”?  “The warmth of the sun”? “Surfin’ Safari”?

I will pick “Surfer girl” this year and I hope that you like it as much as I do:

“Little surfer little one Made my heart come all undone
Do you love me, do you surfer girl
Surfer girl my little surfer girl
I have watched you on the shore Standing by the ocean’s roar
Do you love me do you surfer girl
Surfer girl surfer girl
We could ride the surf together
While our love would grow
In my Woody I would take you everywhere I go
So I say from me to you
I will make your dreams come true
Do you love me do you surfer girl
Surfer girl my little surfer girl
Well Girl surfer girl my little surfer girl
Well….”

The first day of summer and happy birthday to Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys

Brian Wilson was born on this day in 1942.  Like Paul McCartney, he is one of my favorite songwriters.

Isn’t it just right that Brian Wilson was born on the first day of summer?  Aren’t The Beach Boys synonymous with summer?

The Beach Boys are one of my all time favorite groups.  I grew up listening to Brian Wilson songs & those second to none amazing harmonies.  (The Bee Gees’ 3-part harmonies are fabulous too)

My favorite album from the group is “Pet Sounds”, a must for any collection.  It came as # 2 in Rolling Stone’s Top 500 albums.

Brian was the creative heart of the group.  The Beach Boys hit the charts in the early 1960’s and recorded into the 1980’s.  They were Brian, Carl and Dennis Wilson, the three Wilson brothers.   Carl died recently and Dennis was tragically killed in an accident years ago.  The band also included Mike Love, the lead vocalist of “California Girls” and Al Jardine who played guitar.

They recorded “God only knows”, one of the best pop songs ever released.  I also like “Heroes and Villains” & “Surfer Girl”, a couple of tunes that reveal Brian Wilson’s versatility.

West Virginia became the 35th state on this day in 1863.

I have driven through the state a couple of times on my way to Maryland.

It is indeed “almost heaven West Virginia”:

1975: “Jaws” released and going to the beach was never the same

“Jaws” was released on this day in 1975.   I will confess that I thought about the movie every time that I went swimming for years.    The movie was based on a best-selling novel by Peter Benchley.

The film put Steven Spielberg on the map.   He went on to direct “Close Encounters of the Third Kind ” (1977),  “Raiders of the Lost Ark” (1981),  “ET: the Extra-Terrestrial” (1982), ” Jurassic Park” (1993),  “Schindler’s List” (1993) and “Saving Private Ryan” (1998).

The soundtrack was great:
