What song did “Heartbreak Hotel” by Elvis displaced from the #1 spot?

Yesterday, I mentioned that Elvis had his first #1 in April 1956 with ‘Heartbreak Hotel”…..

the #1 song that Elvis displaced was Les Baxter’s “The poor people of Paris”…..

the times were indeed changing…..rock music was knocking on the door!

April 1956: Elvis has his first gold & #1 song in the US….

On this week, “Heartbreak Hotel” by Elvis was the #1 song in the US and a gold record worldwide:

“Well, since my baby left me, I found a new place to dwell.

It’s down at the end of lonely street at Heartbreak Hotel.

Heartbreak is so lonely baby, Heartbreak is so lonely,
Heartbreak is so lonely I could die.
And although it’s always crowded, you still can find some room.
Where broken hearted lovers do cry away their gloom.
Heartbreak is so lonely baby, Heartbreak is so lonely, Heartbreak is so lonely I could die.
Well, the Bell hop’s tears keep flowin’, and the desk clerk’s dressed in black.
Well they been so long on lonely street They ain’t ever gonna look back.
Heartbreak is so lonely baby, Heartbreak is so lonely, Heartbreak is so lonely I could die.
Hey now, if your baby leaves you, and you got a tale to tell.
Just take a walk down lonely street to Heartbreak Hotel.
You’ll be so lonely, baby You’ll be so lonely You’ll be so lonely you could die
Although its always crowded You still can find some room For broken hearted lovers to cry away the blues
Heartbreak is so lonely, baby It is so lonely They’ll be so lonely, they could die…”

There would be a lot more until Elvis died in 1977.

P.S.  The B-Side was “I was the one”, a very underrated song that got some airplay on the radio:

“I was the one who taught her to kiss The way that she kisses you now
And you know the way she touches your cheek Well, I taught her how

I was the one who taught her to cry When she wants you under her spell
The sight of her tears drives you out of your mind I taught her so well

And then one day I had my love as perfect as could be
She lived, she loved, she laughed, she cried And it was all for me

I’ll never know who taught her to lie Now that it’s over and done
Who learned the lesson when she broke my heart? I was the one”
